Caino

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,079 · Postal code: 25070

Caino has the name of Adam's son, but its history begins with a different god. The first Christian place of worship in the Valle del Garza is the pieve della Mitria, dating from 1039, and it stands over an earlier building dedicated to the pagan cult of Mithras: the name of the church is all that is left of the god. The valley, for that matter, was inhabited as early as the middle Palaeolithic, and the conversion to Christianity goes back to the fourth century.

On 20 December 1760 the bishop of Brescia granted the parish of Caino the title of archpriestship, and its priests that of archpriest: not for the number of souls, but for the prestige and the beauty of the church of San Zenone, which holds an altarpiece by Cignaroli. The comune had less luck: in 1928 it was annexed to Nave, and it became autonomous again only on the first of April 1955.
