Calvisano lies flat in the eastern lowlands of the Brescia plain, the river Chiese crossing its south-eastern corner, for a stretch the border with Carpenedolo. The place name may come from the Latin Calvisius or from Calventiani, names of Romans who held land here; the soil has given up plenty of the past: during work on the railway to Parma, at Mercadellus, a Lombard necropolis of some five hundred graves came to light, with small gold crosses and brooches. The arms carry a red rampant dog on gold, with a crowned eagle in chief.

In the fifteenth century the castle was seized by soldiers of the marquis of Mantua; the inhabitants rose and, having won, raised the banners of Saint Mark. Much later the English philologist Robert Seymour Conway argued, in a Manchester lecture of 1922, that Virgil was born on a farm between Calvisano and Carpenedolo; the talk was printed as Where was Vergil's farm? Since the nineteen-seventies sturgeon have been farmed here, and their caviar carries that same Latin name, Calvisius.
