Isorella

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,091 · Postal code: 25010

The coat of arms the town uses today is the one it gave itself in 1797, during the months of the Brescian Republic, with the French revolutionary climate still warm: a republican fasces as a symbol of liberty, surmounted by a Phrygian cap, and behind it two crossed flags, the tricolour on the left and the blue of Brescia on the right. It stayed in use, and the President of the Republic formally granted it in 1991, almost two centuries later: a Jacobin emblem turned into official heraldry.

Four thousand and ninety-one inhabitants in the province of Brescia, on a low, flat plain whose highest point is sixty metres. The Naviglio crosses the village from north to south, and on its two banks two churches face each other, known here as the Handmaid and the Lady: San Rocco and Santa Maria Annunciata. In June 1859 San Rocco took in a great many wounded from the battle of Solferino and San Martino. Until the end of the nineteenth century the municipality was called Isorella con San Nazzaro, after a country church on the road to Leno, destroyed in 1941, which stood where a Roman inscription attests a small temple dedicated to the Matrons and to Apollo.
