Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Acquafredda celebrates its patron Saint Blaise; in mid-October the «Funzione d'ottobre» takes place, born in the eighteenth century from a vow to the Madonna.
The name comes from water: in the twelfth century the village is recorded as Aquae frigdae, because of the many springs the territory still has. From here came a painter who did not stay: Girolamo Muziano, born at Acquafredda in the sixteenth century and become one of the names of the painting of his time. An altarpiece of his, the Assumption, hangs in the parish church of San Bernardino da Siena, which is of the second half of the fifteenth century but was rebuilt between 1743 and 1749; in the same church there is also a Last Supper by Germano Prendaglio.
Work here has changed three times. In the second half of the eighteenth century the Di Rosa family brought silkworm rearing to the village, and with it a measure of social progress: it was a Di Rosa, Paola, who at the start of the following century founded the Handmaids of Charity. When the silk mill closed, in the twentieth century, tobacco growing began, and meanwhile the first workshops making women's stockings were opening. In mid-October they still hold the «Funzione d'ottobre», a fair dedicated to the Blessed Virgin: it was instituted in the mid-eighteenth century for a vow made that a plague might end.
