Cologne lies in Franciacorta, against the western flank of Monte Orfano. Its name is the one the Romans gave to the settlers' holdings, the «colonie», and the village spells it out: on the coat of arms, never formally granted but used by the council, a blue bend carries the word COLONIA in gold. Before them the hill was held by the Cenomani Gauls, who watched the Transpadana road from above.

One place name survives from Lombard rule, la Sala: there the harvest was stored and the lord dispensed justice. The turning point came with water: the Fusia canal, dug in the mid-fourteenth century, still cuts the territory from west to east and brought mills and trade. Its branch is called Mirandola, like one of the two hamlets. The bell tower dates from 1514 and began as the watchtower of the first parish church.
