Ranking as the fifth largest municipality in its province—trailing only Brescia, Desenzano, Montichiari, and Lumezzane—Palazzolo sull'Oglio is home to approximately 19,500 residents. Geographically, it serves as a borderland south of Lake Iseo, sitting precisely halfway between the provincial capitals of Brescia and Bergamo.
Prior to 1862, the town was known simply as Palazzolo. A royal decree appended the river's name to prevent administrative mix-ups with other Italian municipalities and to highlight its physical connection to the water. The main settlement grew directly on the Oglio banks, where some locals still speak the distinct Palahöl dialect and the Torre del Popolo rises — among the tallest civic towers in Italy.
