The Conversion of Paul, patron of the land of the Shrine of Carmel
📅 Every year, on 25 January
Flero celebrates the Conversion of Paul on 25 January, in the church dedicated to it.
Flero lies on the high plain just south of Brescia, on flat ground where water rises from many springs. The name first appears in 841, as Freores, in a document of Ramperto, bishop of Brescia: some link it to the Byzantine word frear, a spring or a place of springs, others to the Gallic fl-ur, which means the same. A later document, though, writes Infleures, "among the flowers", and another idea traces the dialect form Fler to filèr, rows of vines.
The arms speak of fields rather than water: three golden maize cobs on red, under a green chief. From 1927 to 1956 Flero was not even a comune of its own, joined to Poncarale in a single body called Poncarale Flero. From further back come a Gallic armlet of blue glass, of the second century BC, found in what was probably a woman's grave, and the stone with which the Roman Lucio Cornelio Glicone remembered his son, dead as a child. Andrea Pirlo was born here and began playing for the village team.
