San Zeno Naviglio

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,601 · Postal code: 25010

Before it was called San Zeno the village was called Tregonzo, a name thought to come from the Latin inter gurgites, "among the whirlpools", and the people who lived there mostly fished. The saint says as much: Saint Zeno is the patron of fishermen, but also of those who fear floods, which here in the Middle Ages were frequent. For the same reason the village venerated Saint Caesarius of Terracina, of whom the sacristy still keeps a relic inside an urn of carved and gilded wood.

Water has left other marks. The Molone, a canal fed by springs, still runs today in the bed that once belonged to the Garza, before that river was diverted at the end of the eighteenth century into the moat around the walls of Brescia. And until 1817, to get across, people used a ford that went back to Roman times: the bridge came only then. The Naviglio in the name, on the other hand, the village added in 1862.
