Borgosatollo

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,094 · Postal code: 25010

The name turns up as buscolo satulo, leafy wood, in a thirteenth-century property list of the chapter of Brescia cathedral; in the fifteenth Bosco became Borgo, giving the Latin Burgus saturus and the dialect Borsadól. Not everyone trusts the wood: ground so gravelly, it has been objected, could not have carried lush vegetation, and a Lombard origin proposed instead. The arms carry a rampant sheep on blue, copied from a stone carving over the town hall doorway; popular tradition holds that in its place there was once a boar on green, as some versions of the banner show.

The land lay uncultivated and dry until the thirteenth century, when branches of the Naviglio Grande of Brescia, dug at the will of the commune and bishop Berardo Maggi, made it workable. Then came the piantata padana, mulberries married to vines along the ditches, their leaves feeding the silkworms whose silk was reeled beside palazzo Facchi. At the turn of the twentieth century the firm Facchi & Fisogni was the first in Italy to sell milk by the glass bottle, carrying it across Brescia. In 1927 neighbouring Montirone was abolished and handed to Borgosatollo, which returned to its old boundaries in the following decade.
