Ospitaletto

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,579 · Postal code: 25035

The name comes from a shelter for travellers: the hospice of San Giacomo, dedicated to the saint of Compostela who protects wayfarers, appears in a document of 843, when Ramperto, bishop of Brescia, handed its jurisdiction to the monastery of San Faustino. The papers also call it hospitale ducis, a sign that in Lombard times it had belonged to the duke of Brescia, and the parish church still carries that dedication. The arms show a spade blade between two lupin plants in golden fruit, with two quails back to back at the foot.

Before Ospitaletto the local centre was Lovernato, today a large farmstead in the fields south of the town: it is named in 807, in a document recalling a Lombard lord, Dragone di Rodermundo, living in Vico Luernaco. Ospitaletto itself is first named as a municipality in 1369, over a tax quarrel with Passirano. In the parish church, which the community was allowed to build after asking the doge's leave, a Pietà by Romanino is set inside a larger canvas by Antonio Gandino.
