Travagliato

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,447 · Postal code: 25039

Documents older than the year 1000 call Travagliato Treviade and Tiviado: the first part of the name comes from Latin tres or inter and may point to a settlement grown up where country lanes met, while the -ade ending was then given to places of rural origin. The Venetians said Travaleado, later Travajado. The arms are party per pale blue and silver, charged with a medieval spearhead.

In 1821 Caterina Golini left her estate so that a hospital for the sick could be built here, the first of a long line of benefactors; the commission gave the design to Rodolfo Vantini, then thirty-two and already busy with the monumental cemetery of Brescia. The building, with its Doric portico, now holds the town library. Piazza Libertà, faced by the church of Saints Peter and Paul and by the bell tower, was redesigned between 1999 and 2001 by the Swiss architect Mario Botta.
