Torbole Casaglia

Torbole Casaglia lies on the Bassa Bresciana plain, south-west of Brescia. The double name comes from two separate villages, apart for centuries, each with its own parish. Torbole seems to come from aquae turbulae, the murky waters of marshes already there in Roman times; Casaglia from the Latin casalium, a shelter. The coat of arms says the same: a blue field for the water, a sheaf of wheat with three bees for work in the fields, a six-pointed star for the old territory of Casaglia.

In the seventh century a monastery dedicated to Saint Martin was founded at Portone, and the village probably grew around it; in 841 the land passed to the Brescian monastery of San Faustino Maggiore, whose monks the local churches answered to until 1768. Casaglia was long held back by malarial marshes: it joined Torbole in 1880, and drainage wiped out the swamps. The two settlements stayed apart until the nineties, when a new square and town hall joined them.
