Sagra and fair of Saint Peter
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Ponte di Legno, a municipality of 1,754 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul with the sagra and fair of San Pietro.
The name is a misunderstanding. In the document by which in 774 Charlemagne gave the Val Camonica to the church of Saint Martin of Tours, this upper part of the valley is called Dalanias, which would become Dalegno; and from an over-reading of that Dalegno, in the late Middle Ages, came «Ponte di Legno», the wooden bridge. The bridge did exist, over the Frigidolfo torrent, where the old centre stood; the wood was invented by language. In the basin where four valleys converge the Frigidolfo meets the Narcanello, which comes down from the Pisgana glacier, and together they become the Oglio: the river of Lake Iseo begins here.
The main square is called XXVII Settembre, and that is no ordinary date: on 27 September 1917 the village, already evacuated, was shelled in reprisal by Austrian guns and burned. In 1921 the newspapers were celebrating «Pontedilegno risen again», even though the works went on for years. The rest had come before the war: the Ski Club in 1911, one of the first in Italy, and at the beginning of 1912 the Touring Club Italiano naming Ponte di Legno Italy's first winter tourism and sports resort. The frazione of Pezzo, towards the Gavia, is the highest village inhabited all year round in the whole province of Brescia.
