Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 23 and 24 August
On 24 August Temù, a municipality of 1,083 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo; on the eve, in the past, stacks of wood were burned on the mountains.
In 774, in the deed by which Charlemagne gave the Val Camonica to the monastery of Saint Martin of Tours, the northernmost part of the valley is called Dalania: it would become Dalegno, and the name has stayed attached to the hamlet of Villa Dalegno, where the church of San Martino obtained its own font around the year one thousand and no longer had to go down to the parish church of Edolo. In the Venetian period one of the valley's administrative districts was made up of two communities that did not even touch: Borno and Dalegno, each on its own. Today Temù houses the Museum of the White War in Adamello, which gathers what is left of the war fought up here on the glaciers.
The village calendar keeps words that come from far away. On 6 January the gabinàt is given, from the German Gaben Nacht, the night of gifts: when two people met in the morning, the first to say the word had a right to a present, and godparents did not get off lightly. On the eve of Saint Bartholomew, 23 August, stacks of fir wood were burned on the mountains and the windows were lit with little lamps made from snail shells. To the inhabitants the dialect has stuck the scütüm of Cèc, which means green woodpecker.
