Pozzolengo

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,438 · Postal code: 25010

The station that served Pozzolengo bore the name of Pozzolengo, but in 1880 it was taken away: it was renamed San Martino della Battaglia, for the fame the battle of 1859 had given the neighbouring locality. The station, what is more, stands in the territory of Desenzano. So the village lost its own name on the railway to a clash fought next door, and today it no longer has even that: the link is a bus that goes to Desenzano station.

The real name, in any case, comes from water. The old Pocelengo seems to mean the village of the wells, and wells the territory had scattered everywhere, along with the peat bogs. Three thousand four hundred and thirty-eight inhabitants in the province of Brescia, on morainic hills where three provinces and two regions meet. The castle on Monte Fluno dates from the year one thousand; the parish church, of 1510, holds an Antegnati organ. The monumental cemetery is of 1881. Saffron is grown here, along with a biscuit of spelt flour and the morainic salami.
