The disaster that ended the Mille Miglia carries the name of the wrong village. On the twelfth of May 1957, at four minutes past four in the afternoon, at Corte Colomba, the Ferrari of the Spaniard Alfonso de Portago blew a tyre at over 250 kilometres an hour and left the road: the driver died, along with his co-driver Edmund Gurner Nelson and 10 spectators, among them 6 children. That stretch of main road lies within the territory of Cavriana, but the crash has gone down in history as the Guidizzolo tragedy, Guidizzolo being the next commune along. A memorial stone stands on the spot.

Three thousand nine hundred and eleven inhabitants in the province of Mantua, on the moraine hills south of Lake Garda. In the hamlet of Bande, in 2040 BC, a pile-dwelling settlement was founded that lasted until the Middle Bronze Age and from which come the enigmatic tablets in the archaeological museum of the Alto Mantovano. The Gonzaga castle, in an age when this was the border between the Visconti and Venice, became in the fifteenth century a refined residence that hosted Isabella d'Este and architects such as Luca Fancelli; it was demolished in 1771. On the twenty-fourth of June 1859, during the battle of Solferino and San Martino, Villa Mirra was the headquarters first of the Austrians and then of the French: from here Napoleon III wrote to his wife that he had won.
