Monzambano

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,837 · Postal code: 46040

In 1667 the German philosopher Samuel von Pufendorf published a work destined to make a stir throughout Europe, the De Statu imperii germanici, and signed it with a pseudonym: Severini de Monzambano Veronensis. The village that had lent him its name lies among the morainic hills south of Lake Garda, and it had a good deal of Verona about it: its parish belonged to the diocese of Verona until 1977.

The bridge over the Mincio has been fought over twice. In 1848 the retreating Austrians destroyed it, but the Piedmontese engineers put it back up and the troops crossed the river; on 24 June 1866, while the Italian army was losing at Custoza, here the cavalry and infantry commanded by Pianell drove back the Austrian attacks and kept a line of retreat open. In the hamlet of Castellaro Lagusello, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, there is instead a pile-dwelling site that has entered the UNESCO world heritage list.
