Sonico

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,270 · Postal code: 25048

In the village assemblies of Sonico it was the Antichi Originari who ruled: the heads of the native households, the only ones allowed to vote. Nobles, priests and outsiders were excluded, even those who had lived in the village for generations. Their surnames were written down for the first time in the Book of Souls of 1597, and there are some forty of them.

On the bell tower of the sanctuary of Pradella hangs the oldest bell in the Val Camonica, cast in 1421. The nickname of the inhabitants is Gós, goitre, and it may be no accident that the village had a little church of San Gottardo, whose cult was invoked against gout. A Roman bridge came to light after the flood of 1960.
