In 1565 the bishop of Brescia, Bollani, moved the parish church and the baptismal font from Lava to Malonno, which had meanwhile become the most populous settlement; Charles Borromeo confirmed the decision in 1580, during his apostolic visitation. The people of Lava did not accept it: they refused to have their children baptised at Malonno and held out until, in 1717, they obtained a chaplain to officiate in their own church. A hundred and fifty-two years of stubbornness rather than cross the valley with a newborn in their arms.

Beneath the village runs an almost horizontal seam of iron, from west to east, and for centuries smelting was done here: of the great furnace the walls remain, and around it lived the felling of timber and the making of charcoal. In the Catastico of 1610 the Venetian rector Giovanni da Lezze notes chestnuts, cereals and hay, complains that wine is lacking and dwells above all on the iron. In 1630 the inhabitants were about one thousand five hundred and the plague carried off nearly half of them. Today they are three thousand three hundred and twenty, in the Val Camonica, province of Brescia.
