Verolanuova

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,133 · Postal code: 25028

Scholars disagree about where Verola comes from: some derive it from vigriola, uncultivated land, some from the dialect eröla, a small threshing floor, some from the Latin viriola, a little ring, alluding to the Verrone brook now called the Strone; others tie the name to the double Z-bend the river makes here. The town was long Verola Alghisia, after Alghisio Gambara, a vassal of the abbey of Leno; the Gambara held the fief for centuries and almost the whole local story runs through them.

The woman on the arms is the nymph Verola, who in legend roamed the woods along the Strone at night ruining the harvests; the oldest images showed her naked, covered in smallpox pustules, because in Brescian smallpox marks are called eròle and echo the town's name. On the shield she holds three golden arrows and lifts a white veil; the Latin motto warns she was taken neither by a deceitful promise nor by a bond of love. It is one of the five blazons in the arms of the province of Brescia. In the basilica of San Lorenzo, which the Gambara filled by calling in the best painters of the day, hangs the Fall of the Manna by Giambattista Tiepolo, of 1740.
