Saint Gotthard, patron of May
📅 Every year, on 4 May
Gambara celebrates Saint Gotthard on 4 May. The town's other patrons, Saints Peter and Paul, are celebrated on 29 June.
Gambara lies between the Mella and the Chiese, on the right bank of a third river that bears the same name as the village. In the tenth century these lands belonged to the abbey of Leno, and it was the Benedictine monks who drained them: they were covered by thick marshes, and were made fit for cultivation. In 1154 the village passed to the bishopric of Brescia, and later to the noble Gambara family, who left it their name.
The churches of the village went on being painted until only yesterday. In the parish church, which is of 1595, the roundel in the presbytery with Saint Peter receiving the keys is from 1933 and is the work of Guido Antonio Margoni, who together with his brothers Enrico and Renzo formed one of the last companies of fresco painters at work in Lombardy. And on the front of the church of the Madonna della Neve, founded in 1504, the frescoes one sees today were made in the nineteen-nineties by a local painter, Franco Salami.
