Saint John the Baptist, patron of Binago
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Binago celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
Binago and Vedano were bound by what the chronicles call a sacred pact, and it was not a matter of devotion: the two villages had a common interest in the Olona, in its mills and in the line of communication the river represented. In 1121, during the ten years' war between Milan and Como, the Comaschi first sacked Varese and then attacked both allied villages; many people of Binago ended up prisoners in Como. It is the first time Binago appears in history with any certainty.
The name, though, is older. A deed of sale of 774 names two witnesses, Romoaldo son of Tattone and one Lubus, both described as "de Bionaco", though the document does not make clear which place is meant; and by the end of the eleventh century "de Binago" had already become a surname, borne by two men-at-arms recorded at Olgiate. Among themselves, the inhabitants still call one another scusarìtt.
