Solbiate con Cagno

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,588 · Postal code: 22043

When Solbiate and Cagno merged in 2019, the new comune began with a provisional coat of arms that combined elements from the two earlier ones. Then, in October 2022, the inhabitants were asked to choose among three proposals, and they preferred the one that also gave room to the third village, Concagno: its emblem is a seated cat, and that is how the cat ended up on the town's coat of arms, approved the following year.

The two villages have old and separate histories. Solbiate appears in documents of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, in phrases such as loco et fundo Solbiate, and in the statutes of Como of 1335 it is assigned the upkeep of a stretch of road. Cagno was already a village in Lombard times, and in the fifteenth century it formed part of the Odescalchi estates; in 1976 a Roman tomb was excavated there, later moved to the cemetery, where it can still be seen.
