Albiolo

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,679 · Postal code: 22070

The oldest oratory of Albiolo changed its saint by vow. It was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, protector of farmers, and stands at a crossroads between Valmorea, Albiolo and Cagno; during the plague of 1630 the community made a vow to Saint Anne, and since then the little church has borne her name and been a place of pilgrimage, with a fair repeated for more than a hundred years. Inside are kept frescoes of the Lombard school of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and others of the Lugano school of the de Seregno.

Behind the parish church, on a hill overlooking Caversaccio and Cagno, stands the Odescalchi castle, of the thirteenth century and perhaps built on older walls: it belonged to the man who would become the blessed Pope Innocent XI. In the church of the Beata Vergine Annunciata a crucifix is venerated, twin of two others in Como and Vertemate, bought in 1790 by the parish priest don Angelo Patriarca. The village's name is said to come from the Latin alveolus, a little bed or pool of water. Two thousand six hundred and seventy-nine inhabitants in the province of Como.
