Blevio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,185 · Postal code: 22020

Blevio is seven villages: Capovico, Cazzanore, Girola, Meggianico, Mezzovico, Sopravilla and Sorto, which here they called the seven cities and which appear on the arms as seven stars, above a lucia, the boat of the lake. In 1433 the people of Blevio and their neighbours of Torno were granted the right to take salt freely, without paying the tax on it; in 1497 the village fell, with the whole pieve of Nesso, among the property that Ludovico il Moro gave in fief to Lucrezia Crivelli.

Between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century the shore filled up with villas, and with the villas came people. In the cemetery of Blevio lies Giuditta Pasta, the soprano for whom Vincenzo Bellini wrote Norma; Alessandro Manzoni, Adelaide Ristori and the ballerina Marie Taglioni also passed this way. In the summer of 1935 the sculptor Arturo Martini, staying here, turned out in a few weeks eleven plaster sculptures that are still called the Blevio Group.
