Carate Urio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,216 · Postal code: 22010

Carate Urio has existed since 1927, when Carate Lario and Urio were joined into a single municipality: the arms are divided in half, above the lion of the Gallio who held Carate, below the emblem of the Della Porta who held Urio, with flames alluding to the Latin uro, to burn.

Above the village, at the top of a stairway flanked by fourteen chapels of the Way of the Cross, stands Santa Marta, the old parish church: founded around the year one thousand and consecrated in 1095 by Pope Urban the Second, the pope of the first crusade. Inside there are frescoes from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century, but it can be entered only two days a year, the twenty-eighth and the twenty-ninth of July. Lower down, at the church of Saints Quiricus and Julitta, one of the two bell towers was swept away by a flood of the stream below and ended up in the lake.
