Nesso

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,241 · Postal code: 22020

Nesso is cut in two by a gorge: the Nosée and the Tuf throw themselves into it together and end in a waterfall. On one side was the Borgo, on the lake, with the church and the square; on the other the Castello, where the houses of the leading families stood. A stone bridge joined them across the ravine: it collapsed in the fifteenth century and was rebuilt in wood.

The name is Celtic and means mooring. The village first appears in 951, in a privilege of Berengar II. In 1095 pope Urban II came here, perhaps to honour bishop Rainaldo, who lived at Nesso and is buried under the floor of the old church. In 1497 Ludovico il Moro granted the village in fief to Lucrezia Crivelli.
