Until 1900 the royal family came to Erba for the races: the Eupilì racecourse was run by count Turati, a friend of the king, and there you could see Umberto I, queen Margherita and the crown prince. After the king was murdered at Monza, that July, the Savoys never came back.
Long before, inside the Buco del Piombo — a huge cave opening in the mountain above the town — someone was working flint five thousand years ago. Erba as we know it came together in pieces: in 1906 it merged with Incino and for twenty-one years was called Erba Incino, then in 1927 came Crevenna and Buccinigo, in 1928 Arcellasco and Parravicino. There are 16,503 residents.
