Eupilio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,769 · Postal code: 22030

This municipality has a name borrowed from Pliny the Elder. When in 1927 Carella con Mariaga and Penzano — with its hamlets Corneno and Galliano — were merged into a single body, to christen it they went fishing for the Eupilis lacus that Pliny mentions in the Naturalis historia and that Giuseppe Parini, born nearby, had called his own dear Eupili in one of his poems. In Greek the name might mean beautiful gate. In those same years the neighbouring village of Bosisio was adding the poet's surname to its own.

In the coat of arms, besides the tower of the Galliano stronghold and the Visconti serpent, there is a foot: it recalls that Monte Cornizzolo, which rises above the municipality, was once called Monte Pedale. The territory lies between two lakes, the Segrino to the north-west and Pusiano to the south-east, and the water has always drawn people: the shores of Pusiano were inhabited as early as the third millennium before Christ, and on the Segrino, three thousand years earlier, hunters used weapons tipped with flint. Two thousand seven hundred and sixty-nine inhabitants in the province of Como.
