Bosisio Parini

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,504 · Postal code: 23842

In 1929 the village changed its name and became Bosisio Parini: it was two hundred years since the birth of Giuseppe Parini, the poet of Il Giorno, who was born here in 1729. A municipality naming itself after its best known son is not a rarity, but doing it on a round anniversary, and taking his surname, says how much that name weighed. The coat of arms, granted much later, holds two arts together: a lyre for Parini's poetry and three brushes for the painter Andrea Appiani, whose family came from here.

Three thousand five hundred and four inhabitants in the province of Lecco, on the shores of the lake of Pusiano, inside the Parco della Valle del Lambro. A marked route points out the poet's places: the old church of Sant'Anna, the font where he was baptised, the memorial stones, the square and the house where he was born. Villa Appiani was the residence of Angelica Appiani in Banfi, the painter's sister, and beside it stands the neoclassical oratory of San Vitale. The lakeside walk is named after the sports journalist Gianni Brera.
