Olmeneta

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 967 · Postal code: 26010

Olmeneta has 967 inhabitants in the irrigated plain between the Oglio and the Po, some fifteen kilometres north of Cremona. The name comes from the Latin ulmenetum, the elm wood, and on the coat of arms granted in 1933 there is indeed a tree. Of the wood nothing is left: today there are fields and a very dense network of canals, some of them old, coming down from the Naviglio Civico, the Vacchelli canal and the Naviglio Pallavicino.

The village has a peculiarity you notice only by walking through it: it sits a few metres lower than the plain around, in a basin typical of the lower Po valley, probably on the site of a very ancient land reclamation. The climate is the local one, hot humid summers with violent storms, cold and foggy winters. Olmeneta station stands where two lines meet, the Treviglio-Cremona and the Brescia-Cremona: for a village of this size, a railway junction is a rarity.
