Rivolta d'Adda

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,918 · Postal code: 26027

Rivolta d'Adda is the high bank its name describes: in medieval documents it is Ripalta Sicca, to tell it from other places nearby called much the same, and the river was added by the new Italian rulers in 1863. The town is nearer to most provincial capitals of Lombardy than to its own: for centuries it belonged to the Milanese, Napoleon put it briefly under Bergamo, the Habsburgs under Lodi, and only after unification did it end up in the province of Cremona, which is why the local accent is still half Milanese and half Bergamasque.

The first document to name it is of 1090: the gift of four pertiche of land to a church built «in the place and on the estate of Rivolta». In those same years the townspeople were raising the basilica of Santa Maria and San Sigismondo, which they gave with all its property to Pope Urban II; their parish priest Alberto Quadrelli became bishop of Lodi, was proclaimed a saint after his death and is now the patron. From that church comes the gilded silver and enamel tabernacle called «Pace di Rivolta d'Adda», bought by the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan: long taken for a pax, it is really a reliquary of the Cross.
