Feast of Saint Maternus
📅 Every year, on 18 July
On 18 July Comazzo, a municipality of 2,183 inhabitants in the province of Lodi, celebrates its patron Saint Maternus (San Materno).
Comazzo lies at the northern tip of the province of Lodi, on the right bank of the Adda, and it looks the other way: the provincial capital is twenty-one kilometres off, but the life of the village runs through Melzo and Paullo, and the work is in Milan. The name is Latin, Comatio, and the settlement appears in documents as early as the ninth century; later fought over between Lodi and Milan, from 1661 it belonged to the Premoli and then to the Pertusati.
What the Pertusati left behind is the villa, today the town hall: a central block from the end of the sixteenth century and two wings added in the later eighteenth, with the eighteenth-century Fountain of the Seven Notes in the garden. The hamlets tell the rest of the story of absorptions: Lavagna, with its villa Visconti, was annexed for good in 1841 together with Gardino. The municipal coat of arms, on the other hand, arrived only in 2001.
