Feast of Saint Nazarius
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of July
On the last Sunday of July Stagno Lombardo, a municipality of 1,570 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint Nazarius (San Nazario).
Little is known about Stagno Lombardo because the river erased almost everything: the floods of the Po, repeated over the centuries, carried away the traces of the village's past. The name too comes from water, from the pools the floods left behind; and it seems that the original bed of the Adda, or at least one of its branches, once ran through here. Until the mid-nineteenth century the comune was called Stagno Pagliaro: it took the name «Lombardo» to record that part of its territory — Brancere, Porto Polesine — had passed from the duchy of Parma and Piacenza to Lombardy by decree of Napoleon.
One thing, though, happened here and is known precisely. From 1887 to 1890, on the Cittadella farm, Giovanni Rossi set up an experiment in anarchist communal farming: a commune that worked the land together. At Cantone, instead, a small tower remains, what is left of a lazaretto from the time of the Black Death; and at Brancere, on the feast of the Assumption, the Marian procession is held along the Po. On the coat of arms there are sheaves of wheat and a marsh: what the village grew, and what it grew it on.
