Abbadia Lariana

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,249 · Postal code: 23821

In seventy years it changed its name twice. Until 1863 it was simply Abbadia; then it became Abbadia sopra Adda, and from 1928 Abbadia Lariana, that is of the Lario, when the suppressed municipality of Linzanico was added to it. The original name comes from an abbey founded in the Lombard period and later suppressed, of which traces remain in the parish church of San Lorenzo and in a house next to it. In the coat of arms the two stars stand for Abbadia and Linzanico, the two communities that today make a single municipality.

In the arms there are also hammers, for the working of silk. Between 1817 and 1819 Pietro Monti built here the first nucleus of the silk mill, taking in a fifteenth-century building, enlarged in the seventeenth, which had been first a grain mill and then a fulling mill for woollen cloth: three different trades within the same walls, held together by the water. Today it is the municipal silk-mill museum. In Val Monastero the Zerbo torrent makes a drop of some fifty metres, the only waterfall of any size in the whole Grigne group. Three thousand two hundred and forty-nine inhabitants in the province of Lecco.
