Here the valley takes its name from the village and not the other way round: from Asso comes Val Assina, then Vallassina, written as one word in the Middle Ages. And the village's name, on the soundest hypothesis, is a proto-Celtic word meaning mouth, used also for river mouths and confluences — which is exactly where Asso stands, at the point where the two half-valleys meet. Supporting that reading are the oldest finds in the territory, made at Cranno, by the Vallategna waterfall, where the mountain Lambro takes in the Foce torrent.

Three thousand six hundred and twenty-five inhabitants in the province of Como. Asso has been the chief town of the Vallassina from time immemorial and long held religious and administrative autonomy as an archiepiscopal pieve: to this day the provost of Asso holds by right, for the whole of his term, the title of monsignor. From 1183 the village had its own civil and criminal statutes. The traditional nickname of the inhabitants, in dialect, is spazapulée, which translates as chicken thieves.

Saint Apollonia and the Horse Festival

📅 Every year, on 9 February, with the burning of the balloon

Asso celebrates Saint Apollonia on 9 February, with the burning of the balloon: although Saint John the Baptist is the town's formal patron, this is the more deeply felt celebration. Every first Saturday of October, the Horse Festival is held.
