Missaglia

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,579 · Postal code: 23873

The name passed through Massalia, Masalia, Massaria and Massaglia without losing the root massa, an estate: Missaglia, in the middle of the Merate district, began as one large farm. A parish seat from the eighth century, it headed a territory that Berengario del Friuli gave to the chapter of Monza cathedral and that later went to the archdiocese of Milan; in 1647 the fief passed to the family of Paolo Sormani, who the year before had distinguished himself at a battle won against the French at Lecco.

The monastery of Santa Maria della Misericordia was founded by Michele Carcano; its church, consecrated in 1498, became a warehouse in 1797 under Napoleon's secularisation. Of the paintings that filled it, a Madonna and Child with Saint Sebastian attributed to Foppa and a few others survive, kept today in the town hall. In the cemetery lies Ernesto Teodoro Moneta, the only Italian awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
