Olgiate Molgora

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,190 · Postal code: 23887

Until 1863 the place was simply Olgiate: the second name, from the Molgora stream, told it apart from Olgiate Comasco and Olgiate Olona, while the first is thought to come from Celtic olca, ploughed flat land. The name kept moving: in 1927 the comune absorbed Calco and Mondonico, becoming Olgiate Calco a year later; in 1953 Calco was restored and the old name with it.

Beolco holds the oldest past: a Roman altar of unknown date and, in the church of San Pietro, the funerary slab of Aldo and Grauso, Lombard nobles buried around 700 and recorded by Paul the Deacon in his Historia Langobardorum. The territory is dotted with hamlets, several of them comuni in their own right until the Austrians cut them to two. A revolt led by Giovanni da Cicognola against the feudal lords was put down in blood, with burnings at the monastery of Santa Maria Hoè and prison in the castle of Viganò; in 1646 Olgiate bought out its feudal tenure. Its arms show a red castle with two towers and Guelph merlons under a blue hunting horn.
