Cernusco Lombardone

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,851 · Postal code: 23870

There is a via Spluga in the village, and the name was not chosen for effect: the Roman road that climbed from Milan to the Splügen pass and went on to Lindau, on Lake Constance, really did pass through here. Two thousand years later the route has become a village street with houses from the early twentieth century, but the name recalls that this corner of the Brianza lay on one of the lines that led over the Alps.

Three thousand eight hundred and fifty-one inhabitants in the province of Lecco, between the valleys of the Molgora and the Curone; a third of the municipal territory lies inside the regional park of Montevecchia and the Curone valley. With Montevecchia, in fact, the village was joined for thirty-eight years: from 1928 to 1966 the municipality was called Cernusco Montevecchia. Of the castle that stood here in the time of Ariberto da Intimiano and later of Frederick Barbarossa, structures from the early fourteenth century survive, absorbed into what became a manor house, first of the Petroni, then of the Castelli and finally of the Cernuschi.
