A branch of the Roman road between Milan and Piacenza ran through Bertonico, the one that left Laus Pompeia and made for Cremona: land you pass through, and therefore land that others want. The list of its masters is long and almost entirely foreign to it. It belonged to the bishop of Lodi in the eleventh century, then to the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro by a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa in 1159, then to the Milanese hospitals of Brolo and Santa Caterina, to which Bernabò Visconti granted it in 1359, and from 1458 to the Ospedale Maggiore of Milan.

Of that distant ownership the most telling building in the village remains: the estate office, put up in the eighteenth century by the Ospedale Maggiore to administer the fief. A palace raised to keep accounts, not to be lived in. In the parish church of San Clemente, designed in the middle of the sixteenth century by Giovanni Battista Lonate da Birago, hangs a painting by Giovan Battista Trotti, known as il Malosso. The twentieth century sent its administrators from outside too: between 1970 and 1985 a Gulf Oil refinery worked on the boundary with Turano Lodigiano, and on the same ground, since 2011, a gas turbine power station has been running.
