Lodi LO

Region: Lombardy · 60 towns · Population: 223,755

Lodi is one of Italy's youngest provinces. It was carved out of the province of Milan on 6 March 1992 and covers 60 municipalities in southern Lombardy, wedged between Milan to the north, Cremona to the east and Pavia to the west, and reaching south across the regional border to the edge of Emilia, near Piacenza. It is flat country throughout, with no hills at all: anyone arriving with the Lombardy of lakes and mountains in mind will find the opposite here.

This is a province you travel by town rather than by monument. Five of its municipalities hold the formal Italian title of città: besides Lodi itself, the provincial capital, there are Codogno, Casalpusterlengo, Sant'Angelo Lodigiano and Lodi Vecchio, and none of them is a place you merely drive past. Distances are tiny, minutes from one to the next, which is the argument for taking it slowly.
