Castiglione d'Adda

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,818 · Postal code: 26823

The name of Castiglione speaks of soldiers: it is said to come from castrum legionis, the camp, or from castrum Stiliconis, after the general Stilicho. Through here ran a branch of the Roman road that linked Milan to Piacenza, leaving Lodi Vecchio to reach Cremona. The d'Adda was added to it in 1863, to distinguish it from the other places called Castiglione scattered about Italy.

The fief changed hands many times: after belonging to the bishop of Lodi, in 1389 it went to the Fissiraga, then to the Fieschi, to the Pallavicino of Busseto, to the counts Serbelloni and finally to the Ordoño de Rosales. Of that past the castle remains, later become palazzo Pallavicino Serbelloni, with its rectangular plan, corner towers and a sixteenth-century rusticated front. In February 2020 the village was one of the Italian epicentres of the Covid pandemic.
