Borghetto Lodigiano

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,379 · Postal code: 26812

The coat of arms the town uses today is not the one it was granted. The royal decree of 1936 assigned it an emblem with the fascist chief, the compulsory ornament of the day, and without the stars, without the ribbon bearing the motto HUMILITAS, without the standard on the castle and without the gold band with the letters P A B. In the version now in use the lictor's bundle is gone and everything else is there. Those three initials stand for Pier Antonio del Borghetto, a man of letters and a religious born in the eighteenth century in the Ognissanti locality, inside the municipal territory: a village that rewrote its own arms to make room for its scholar.

Four thousand three hundred and seventy-nine inhabitants in the province of Lodi, on the left bank of the Lambro. In Roman times, on the boundary with what are now Brembio and Livraga, stood the posting station of Tres Tabernae on the road that linked Mediolanum to Placentia by way of Lodi Vecchio. The official name dates from 1863, when Lodigiano was added to distinguish it from the other Borghetti of Italy. In the main square stands, almost free on all sides, the Palazzo Rho, a late Gothic brick building of the fifteenth century and now the town hall: on its top floor it houses the Little Museum of Humble Trades.
