Brembio

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,647 · Postal code: 26822

Brembio is of Roman origin and in 725 belonged to the Pavian monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, the same that in those years was receiving lands across half of Lombardy; it then passed to the church of Santa Maria of Lodi and finally to various Lodi families. In the hamlet of Monasterolo there remain the ruins of a Benedictine monastery of 972, by now hidden inside later buildings; the parish church of Santa Maria Nascente and the building that would become Palazzo Andreani were put up in 1731 by the Gerolomini of Ospedaletto.

The village is surrounded by everything one needs to go somewhere else. To the north runs the Milan-Bologna railway, but the station is at Secugnago and you get there by bicycle; to the south-west the territory is skirted by the Autostrada del Sole, and beside it runs the high-speed line. Brembio, meanwhile, remains a village of fields and byres: maize and wheat, pigs and cattle, on farms almost all family-run. Two thousand six hundred and forty-seven inhabitants in the province of Lodi.
