Ossago Lodigiano

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,412 · Postal code: 26816

This comune is made of farmsteads that used to be comuni. In the Napoleonic period, between 1809 and 1816, Brusada, Ceppeda and Grazzano were aggregated to Ossago; with the constitution of the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom all three took back their autonomy and ended up in the district of Borghetto in the province of Lodi and Crema. Then the Austrian government went back on its own steps: on 22 January 1841 it again and definitively suppressed the comune of Brusada, annexing it to Ossago, and Grazzano went the same way in the same year. Ceppeda held out a quarter of a century longer: at the unification of Italy, in 1861, it counted two hundred inhabitants, and in 1866 it too was aggregated.

Today Ceppeda and cascina Bruseda are precisely two farmsteads, one east and one west of the built-up area: the first is a rural locality attested since the Middle Ages and always part of the Contado of Lodi, the second an ancient comune of the same contado. It is worth stopping on this a moment, because it is the most concrete way of seeing how fine the administrative grain of the Lodi plain used to be: for half a century a courtyard of stables and houses with two hundred people had boundaries of its own and a name of its own in the district lists, and today that name stands on a farm gate. In the comunal territory, meanwhile, the factory has settled where Camoscio d'Oro is made, a soft cheese with an edible rind.
