In the seventeenth century the fief of Formigara was bought by a family of rich merchants, the Archetti, and in 1743 the empress Maria Theresa of Austria made them marquises of Formigara and barons of the Holy Roman Empire. They lived mostly elsewhere, at Brescia and at Santa Giustina near Castenedolo, and there, on the memorial stone of one of them, a Latin formula can still be read calling him lord of the people of Formigara: the name of this village of the plain carved on a wall far away. From the same house came cardinal Giovan Andrea Archetti, a churchman of weight and a friend of the tsarina Catherine II of Russia.

What is here, instead, is simpler and more lasting. In 1841 the municipality grew by taking in Cornaleto, which became its hamlet and kept its own church, that of Sant'Andrea the apostle, beside the Santi Nazario e Celso of Formigara. And every year, on the last two days of January and the first of February, on the forecourt of the church people sing the canti della Merla: these are the days that the tradition of the plain holds to be the coldest of the year, and people spend them outside singing instead of under cover. The village fair, milder, falls on the fourth Sunday of September.
