Feast of San Giovanni Battista
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of August
On the last Sunday of August Orio Litta, a municipality of 2,023 inhabitants in the province of Lodi, celebrates its patron San Giovanni Battista.
Orio Litta was born to feed those passing through: in Roman times there were a stable and a granary here, on the Mantovana road, to give travellers something to eat, and the name probably comes from exactly that, from horreum or hordeum, the granary and the barley. The land, though, was marsh: it was the Benedictines of San Pietro in Lodi Vecchio who reclaimed it, from 885 onwards.
Twelve centuries later the trade is the same. The Grangia Benedettina, a monastic settlement before the year one thousand and later a Benedictine farmstead, has a tower with two little rooms on two floors and four beds for the pilgrims who walk the via Francigena: from the second floor you can watch the sun set over the lowland of the Lambro. The rest of the village was made by the Cavazzi, who in the eighteenth century brought it to its best moment, and by the Litta, whose surname entered the official name in 1863, so as not to be confused with the other Orios of Italy.
