Ospedaletto Lodigiano

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,853 · Postal code: 26864

In the middle of the village stands a triumphal arch. The French general Chevilly had it built in 1804 and dedicated it to Napoleon; it is called the Arch of Peace. After the two world wars, on the arch dedicated to the conqueror they added the plaques with the names of the village's dead and missing: a monument to a general became the monument to everybody's dead.

The name, on the other hand, comes from a hospital. There was one here in ancient times — it was also called Ospedaletto di Senna — and in the fifteenth century the Gerolimini monks built the abbey beside it, taking over the hospital's property; the monastery was suppressed by the French in 1797. On the coat of arms there is a cock, recalling saint Peter, patron along with saint Paul, and under its claws leafy branches: they may be the herbs with which the friars treated the sick. In 1863 the village added «Lodigiano» so as not to be confused with the other Ospedalettos.
