Volta Mantovana

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,298 · Postal code: 46049

The name comes from volvita, a turn, and follows the line of the morainic hills the town spreads over, in a border strip where three provinces meet. Here, on 15 October 1080, the militias of the bishop-counts siding with Henry IV beat the troops defending Pope Gregory VII under Matilda of Canossa: the countess's first serious military defeat.

Palazzo Gonzaga-Guerrieri, today the town hall, was built in the mid-fifteenth century by Ludovico III Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg as a country villa, set against a tower and a stretch of the town walls; its Italian garden on four levels uses stone columns salvaged from monasteries suppressed under Napoleon. From here, on 11 April 1848, Charles Albert, whose headquarters were in the house, ordered Sardinian warships and merchant vessels to fly the tricolour.
