Goito sits on the right bank of the Mincio, where the Via Postumia from Cremona to Verona crossed, and that ford made its history. Two explanations compete: some trace the name to the Goths, who fortified the place after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, others to the Latin guttus, a water jug, probably a nod to the river. Sordello, the thirteenth-century poet and troubadour, was born here; the permanent meadows around are recorded from the fifteenth century.

Ludovico III Gonzaga, marquis of Mantua, had the brick bridge over the Mincio and the canal built, restored the fortifications and kept a residence here where Mantegna worked and where he died of plague in 1478. The earthquake of 1693 brought down the Merlesco quarter, the fortress walls and part of the parish church. In 1848 Alessandro La Marmora's bersaglieri had their baptism of fire on the bridge, he himself wounded, and that victory gave it the name Ponte della Gloria.
